Practised by the women of Mithila in central India, the Madhubani folk art form is believed to be 2,500 years old. The paintings have very distinct characteristics and images are drawn from everyday life and mythology. Common themes include women at work, animals (cows, fish and birds being most prominent), village celebrations, nature (sun, moon, tree of life and flowers), and mythology (images of Rama-Sita and Krishna-Radha).
